Douro Superior

In the Douro Superior you can find Archaeological Park of the Coa Valley, with countless testimonies of ancient occupation of this region since prehistoric times

During the occupation by the Roman Empire starts the culture of vines and wines in our region.
In 1756, the Marquis of Pombal established and regulated the appellation of the Alto Douro Wine Region, a pioneering initiative that has put our region in the leading of contemporary wine appellations, that still today inspires the organization of new wine regions around the world.
The original landscape was dominated by huge cliffs overlooking the Douro River, and the culture of the vines by the labor of man transformed that into terraces built at the whim of the contour of the hills, supported by large walls of shale. All that made the Alto Douro Wine Region be recognized as World Heritage.
